A work order is the execution unit that tells the floor what to make, how many, and under what conditions. It is the anchor that production results and quality history attach to.
The work order is where a plan becomes execution: which item, how many, on which machine, to which drawing and conditions.
It matters for a second reason — all history attaches to it. Who worked when, which material was issued, what the inspection found: all of it collects at the work order. When the work order exists only on paper, that history scatters.
Work orders change constantly in execution: quantities adjust, schedules move, specifications revise. Without a change history you cannot later explain why something was built the way it was.
The ERP manufacturing order is a planning unit; the shop-floor work order is an execution unit. One manufacturing order frequently splits into several work orders, or into one per process step.

As granular as the history you want to keep. Process-level for process progress, lot-level for product traceability. Too fine and the data-entry burden on the floor grows.
Approach it in stages. Once checking and entry work on the terminal, paper falls away naturally. Aiming for full elimination on day one invites resistance.
They should be. Knowing when and by whom quantity, schedule or specification changed is what lets you explain the outcome afterwards.
