MTTR is total repair time divided by the number of failures. Lower means faster recovery.

Reducing MTTR usually depends less on repair skill than on preparation. The time spent diagnosing, locating a spare and reaching the right person often exceeds the actual repair.

That is why it helps to measure repair not as one block but split into detection, diagnosis, parts, repair and verification. Which segment is long tells you what to improve.

  • Break the interval from report to restart into segments and find the bottleneck.
  • Use it as evidence for which spares to hold in stock.
  • Compare MTTR across machines to find where the response system is weakest.

When does the clock start?

Measuring from the moment of failure gives a very different number than from the moment maintenance was notified. Starting at failure includes detection delay and is closer to actual loss. Either way, fix the definition so comparisons hold.
