Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) is the average running time between one failure and the next. It is a measure of equipment reliability.

In more detail

MTBF is total operating time divided by the number of failures. A larger value means longer intervals between breakdowns, which reads as more stable equipment.

It is frequently used as the basis for setting preventive maintenance intervals: inspect on a cycle shorter than the mean interval and you intervene before the failure. That reasoning weakens when failures are not random but cluster around a specific component life.

Calculating MTBF requires first defining failure. Whether only line-stopping events count, or also incidents resolved immediately, changes the number considerably.

How it is used on the floor

  • Compare MTBF across machines to find those failing repeatedly.
  • Use it as evidence when setting preventive maintenance intervals.
  • Check whether reliability actually improved after a corrective action.

MTBF and MTTR are a pair

MTBF asks how long it survives; MTTR asks how fast it is restored. Long MTBF with long MTTR still means every stop is expensive. You need both to set direction.
