An edge gateway sits close to the equipment, collects data across incompatible protocols, normalises it and forwards it to upstream systems.

In more detail

A factory mixes protocols. Ethernet PLCs, RS-485 instruments and machines that emit only dry contacts sit on the same line. If upstream systems had to absorb all of that, maintenance would not scale.

The edge gateway is where the difference is absorbed. It reads each machine in its own protocol, attaches names and units, and publishes one consistent shape. Adding a machine does not change the upstream system.

Placing it on the floor has further benefits: it can buffer values through a network outage and send them once connectivity returns, and it can filter what does not need transmitting.

How it is used on the floor

  • Receive heterogeneous machine signals in one place and convert them to a standard format.
  • Buffer data during network interruptions and forward after recovery.
  • Act as the boundary between the control network and the upper network.

Gateway versus simple converter

A converter changes only the electrical signal format, for example RS-485 to Ethernet. A gateway also handles the meaning of the data — naming addresses, assigning units, buffering and filtering.

Technically yes, but check security policy and network reliability first. Keeping collection on premises and exporting only what is needed is the common pattern.
