Which one fits

Using both

Starting with POP and widening to MES is common and sensible: once result collection is stable, materials and quality are layered on the same data.

One caution applies. At the POP stage the identification scheme and data structure must be extensible. Designed for results alone, adding lot traceability later means rebuilding from scratch.

Initial cost is generally lower because the scope is narrower. Including the cost of later expansion narrows the gap, so what matters is whether the design anticipates it.

Can POP alone deliver traceability?

Only partially. Tracing requires material issue and inspection results to be linked beyond result collection.

The terms seem to be used differently by different companies

They are. Some treat POP as the shop-floor terminal part of MES, others as a separate product. Checking which functions are included is more reliable than the label.

Which one covers equipment integration?

Both can. Machines are frequently connected at the POP stage precisely to automate result collection.
